JOINT STATEMENT: RED GRANITE TO BE LOCATED AT HEWITT-TEXAS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

WAUSAU, WI — The Wausau School District and Red Granite Charter School officially announce Hewitt-Texas Elementary School as the charter school’s new home for the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 school years.

The Wausau School Board approved the relocation request at their meeting on Monday night.

“The Red Granite Governance Board and design team are grateful to have a home for the next two years. This will give us the time and energy to work on all the details needed to create an amazing learning community ready to welcome families of incoming PK-2nd grade students.  The Red Granite team is looking forward to the partnership with Hewitt Texas and all of the opportunities a shared campus has to offer. Thank you to the Wausau community for its continued support. The enrollment period for the 2024/25 school year closes on March 1st. The Governance Board will conduct their lottery on Tuesday, March 5th, at their special Board meeting. For details, please visit the Red Granite website,” said Founder and Charter School Consultant Chamomile Nusz

Red Granite is a Waldorf-inspired public school that will have an environmental focus. Waldorf education is a holistic approach to education that emphasizes the development of the whole child, both academically and emotionally. It is based on the belief that children learn best through hands-on experiences and that they need time to explore and wonder. The school will serve students in pre-kindergarten through second grade for the first year, and then the plan is to expand to third grade the following year.

“The Wausau School District is excited to continue the collaboration with Red Granite Charter School. There is a growing demand for educational options in our area, and Red Granite would be one of very few Waldorf-inspired public schools in the state of Wisconsin.  This school will provide a unique and valuable educational experience for students and their families who are interested in this model of learning.” said Wausau School District Superintendent Dr. Keith HIlts.

Red Granite originally planned to open up at Monk Botanical Gardens this fall. However, in order to open up on Monk Gardens’ property, significant site planning, permitting, and fundraising were all necessary.  There's just not enough time for that to be completed in a thoughtful manner before the school opens up this fall.

Both Red Granite and Hewitt-Texas Elementary students and staff will learn and grow on the same campus until a permanent home for Red Granite Charter School is identified.
